Google Business Profile Not Showing Up in Search? 9 Reasons and Fixes
Your Google Business Profile exists but isn't appearing in local searches. Here are the 9 most common causes — and how to fix each one.

You created your profile. You verified it. But when you search for your business — nothing. Or you appear in the knowledge panel for your branded name but never in local searches.
Here are the 9 most common reasons, in order of likelihood.
1. You're searching while logged in from the same office
Google personalises results heavily. If you've searched for your own business 50 times from the same IP, Google may rank you lower for you specifically (to give you new info).
Test: search in an incognito window from a different network (mobile data, coffee shop, friend's house). If you appear there, this was the issue.
2. The profile isn't verified yet
Unverified profiles often appear in branded searches but rarely in competitive local pack results.
Fix: complete verification. Options:
- Postcard (5-14 days for Irish delivery)
- Video verification (3-5 days, Google's preferred method now)
- Phone (sometimes available)
- Email (rare, service-area businesses only)
If your postcard never arrived, request video verification through the dashboard.
3. Wrong primary category
Category is the single biggest ranking factor in local searches. If you're a "Marketing Consultant" but selected "Business Consultant" as primary, you'll never rank for "marketing" queries.
Fix: go to Edit profile → Business category and pick the most specific match. Use PlePer's Category Tool to see what categories your top competitors use.
4. Address inconsistency across the web
Google reads citations from directories, social media, and your website. If your address shows differently in 5 places, Google has low confidence in your location — and won't risk showing you to nearby searchers.
Common Irish examples:
- "Main Street" vs "Main St"
- Eircode missing on one citation
- "Dublin 2" vs "Dublin 02"
- Old address still on Yelp / TripAdvisor / Yellow Pages
Fix: audit your top 15 citations and make every NAP (Name, Address, Phone) identical. Tools: Whitespark, BrightLocal, or a manual sweep takes 2 hours.
5. Your business name has keyword stuffing
If your business name on GBP is "Joe's Plumbing — Best Plumber Dublin", Google's algorithm may demote it or even suspend the listing. This is a clear policy violation.
Fix: change your name to the actual legal/trading name. No keywords, no location modifiers, no taglines.
6. Missing fields hurt your "completeness score"
Google ranks complete profiles higher than skeleton ones. Check you have:
- Logo
- Cover photo
- 10+ photos
- Hours including special hours
- Business description (750 chars max, use them all)
- Services / menu items
- Attributes (wheelchair access, payment methods, etc.)
A profile at 60% complete will lose to one at 95% complete in tight searches.
7. Profile is suspended (and you don't know it)
Sometimes profiles get soft-suspended without an obvious notification. The dashboard still loads, but the listing isn't shown to the public.
Test: search for your business name in incognito from a far-away location. If you see other businesses but not yours, you may be suspended.
Fix: see our GBP suspension recovery guide.
8. You're in a fiercely competitive area
In central Dublin or Cork, the local pack for terms like "restaurant", "plumber", "dentist" is dominated by businesses with 200+ reviews and decades of operation. New businesses can't crack the top 3 without serious effort.
Fix:
- Target long-tail keywords instead — "vegan brunch Dublin 4" beats "restaurant Dublin"
- Build citation density — get listed on 30+ Irish directories
- Acquire reviews steadily — aim for 5+ new reviews per month
- Post on GBP weekly to signal activity
9. The map pin is in the wrong place
Sometimes Google places your pin in the centroid of your Eircode area instead of your exact address. Searches "near you" may not consider you nearby.
Fix:
- Go to GBP → Edit profile → Address
- Click the map
- Drag the pin to your exact location
- Save
This often takes 24-48 hours to update across all of Google's systems.
Bonus: 3 less common but possible reasons
A. Your service area is too narrow (or too wide)
Service-area businesses (plumbers, photographers) need to set their service area carefully. Too narrow: you miss searches just outside your zone. Too wide: Google trusts you less because the area is huge.
Recommended: 30-45 minute drive time around your base.
B. Your website isn't mobile-friendly
Google checks the website linked from your GBP. If it's slow or unresponsive on mobile, your GBP gets demoted in mobile searches (which is most of them now).
Test: PageSpeed Insights
C. Google merged you with a competitor
Rare but happens — Google's deduplication algorithm sometimes merges separate businesses incorrectly. You'll know because your reviews suddenly appear on someone else's listing or vice versa.
Fix: file a conflict claim with Google. Takes 2-4 weeks.
How to monitor your visibility
Searching for yourself isn't reliable (Google personalises). Instead:
- Use Google's Insights tab in GBP → "How customers search for your business" shows actual queries
- Use BrightLocal's rank tracker or PlePer for proper local pack tracking
- Set up MyReputation.ie to alert you if your category or visibility-critical fields change
TL;DR
If your profile isn't showing up:
- Test in incognito from a different IP
- Verify your account
- Optimise primary category
- Audit NAP consistency
- Fix any keyword stuffing in name
- Complete every profile field
- Check for soft suspension
- Use long-tail keywords if highly competitive
- Fix map pin precision
Most of these are 1-day fixes. Some compound effects (citations, reviews) take 1-3 months to fully take effect. Patience and consistency win.
