How to Verify Your Google Business Profile (Including Without a Postcard)
Postcard verification can take weeks or never arrive. Here are all the verification options for Irish businesses — video, phone, email — and how to choose the right one.

You've created your Google Business Profile, but until you verify it, it doesn't really exist. Unverified profiles rarely appear in local searches and you can't manage them properly.
Google offers several verification methods. Here's how to choose the right one for your business — and what to do if your postcard never arrives.
Verification methods (2026)
| Method | Speed | Availability | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video | 3-5 days | Most businesses | First choice — fastest, most reliable |
| Postcard | 5-14 days (Ireland) | Most businesses | Backup if video declined |
| Phone | Instant | Limited businesses | If offered, use it |
| Instant | Service-area businesses | If offered, use it | |
| Bulk verification | Custom | 10+ locations | Multi-location only |
| Search Console | Instant | If you own the domain | Rare but useful |
Method 1: Video verification (Google's preference now)
Since 2024, Google has been pushing video verification as the primary method. It's fast and works for most businesses.
What you'll need to record
A continuous video showing:
- Your business signage — front door, sign with the business name
- Your premises — interior shots
- Equipment, tools, or stock specific to your business
- Yourself or staff working
- Any other proof that this is a real, operating business
Total duration: 1-3 minutes typically.
Tips for passing video verification first time
- Film in landscape orientation
- Continuous filming — Google rejects edited videos
- Show signage clearly with the exact business name as on your GBP
- Walk around showing multiple angles
- For service-area businesses, show your van/equipment with your branding
- For office-based businesses, show your business cards or letterhead matching the name
What can fail video verification
- Signage doesn't match GBP name exactly
- No external signage (common for upstairs offices)
- Generic interior that could be any business
- Service-area businesses without branded vehicles
- Co-working spaces where you're a tenant
If video fails, Google usually falls back to postcard.
Method 2: Postcard verification (the traditional way)
The classic method. Works if you have a physical address Google can mail to.
What happens
- Submit your address for postcard verification
- Google sends a postcard to that address within 5-14 days (Irish delivery often at the slower end)
- Postcard contains a 5-character verification code
- Enter the code in your GBP dashboard
Common issues in Ireland
- Postcard never arrives — common in apartment buildings, business parks, areas with poor postal addressing
- Postcard goes to the wrong unit — if multiple businesses share an address
- Eircode confusion — sometimes postcards return as undeliverable
What to do if your postcard hasn't arrived after 14 days
- Go to your GBP dashboard
- Click "Request another code" (you get up to 2-3 retries)
- Triple-check your address is exactly right
- Try video verification as an alternative
Method 3: Phone verification (sometimes available)
If you see "Verify by phone" as an option, take it. It's instant.
What happens
- Google calls or texts the phone number on your GBP listing
- You receive a verification code
- Enter it in the dashboard
Why it's not always offered
Google only offers phone verification if:
- They have high confidence in the phone number
- Your business type qualifies
- You're not in a region with known fraud patterns
For Irish businesses, phone verification is offered roughly 30% of the time. If you see it, use it.
Method 4: Email verification (service-area businesses)
Sometimes offered for service-area businesses (those without a public storefront). Google emails a code to a domain-matched address.
Example: if your business is "Doyle Plumbing" with website doyleplumbing.ie, Google emails [email protected] or similar.
When this works
- You own the domain
- The business name and domain match clearly
- Your domain email is set up and active
If you don't own a domain matching your business name, this method isn't available.
Method 5: Search Console verification (for established businesses)
If you've already verified your website ownership in Google Search Console, and your GBP listing matches your website domain, you may be offered instant verification.
This is rare but useful for businesses with established web presence.
Method 6: Bulk verification (10+ locations)
If you operate 10 or more locations of the same business (chain, franchise, agency managing many), apply for bulk verification:
support.google.com/business/answer/4567386
Process:
- Upload all your locations via spreadsheet
- Submit a bulk verification form
- Google reviews your business and may verify all locations at once
- Takes 1-2 weeks but saves dozens of individual verifications
What to do while waiting
Your unverified listing exists but is limited. While waiting:
- Don't make excessive edits — they may trigger spam filters
- Don't create alternative listings or accounts
- Add core info (NAP, hours, primary category) but hold off on photos/posts until verified
- Verify your website ownership in Search Console (helps future-proof you)
After verification: what changes
Once verified:
- Your listing appears in local searches
- You get full edit access
- You can respond to reviews
- You can create Google Posts
- You can view Insights
- You can set up direct messaging
- You get email alerts for some changes (but not all — see below)
After verification: monitor your profile
This is where most businesses go wrong. Verification protects you from impersonation, but it doesn't stop:
- Suggested edits from the public
- Algorithmic changes by Google
- Competitor sabotage
These happen after verification and they happen often. The only way to catch them is automated monitoring.

Common verification questions
Can I have multiple owners on one listing?
Yes. You're the Primary Owner, and you can add Owners and Managers under Menu → Business Profile settings → People and access.
Each owner can verify ownership independently. Managers can edit but not invite or remove other users.
Can I verify a business that's not at a fixed address (service-area)?
Yes — hide your street address and set a service area instead. Verification options narrow (mostly to video and email).
My business doesn't have a name yet (sole trader). What name do I use?
Use your trading name (the name you do business under). Many sole traders use "[Your name] [Profession]" e.g. "Mary O'Brien Photography". You can't use just a personal name with no business indication.
Can someone else verify my business before me?
Unfortunately yes — this happens. If someone has falsely verified your business, file a conflict claim with Google: support.google.com/business/answer/4566671
You'll need to prove ownership with business registration documents, utility bills, and signage photos.
What if Google denies my verification?
If video or postcard verification is rejected, Google usually tells you why. Common reasons:
- Address mismatch with other public records
- Business name doesn't match signage
- Suspicious activity (multiple recent verification attempts from same IP)
- Industry restrictions (rehab clinics, locksmiths have extra scrutiny)
Address the specific issue and resubmit. If repeatedly denied, contact support directly.
TL;DR
- Video verification = first choice in 2026 (fast, reliable)
- Postcard = fallback (slow, often unreliable in Ireland)
- Phone/email = take it if offered (instant)
- Bulk = for chains/franchises with 10+ locations
After verification, monitor your profile so changes don't slip through unnoticed.
